Hola y bienvenidos
Welcome to the Spanish 1 Curriculum One/College Prep class. I’m looking forward to teaching this class. We are going to focus on the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. You will have plenty of opportunities to use and improve these skills.
We will speak Spanish as much as possible in class. If you have questions or don’t understand something in Spanish, please raise your hand and ask for clarification. I will explain things again.
It’s important for everyone to feel comfortable in class. Please respect me and your classmates by listening to others when we speak. Encourage your classmates to speak Spanish as much as possible. Treat yourself and others with kindness!
The textbook we will use for grammar is Paso a Paso Uno. You will be given opportunities to express yourself in written Spanish through sentences and paragraphs. Skits and oral presentations will be part of the course.
Expectations for class
1. I will keep copies of Paso a Paso Uno in the classroom. You may check one out, but will need to bring it to class each day.
2. Have a notebook for class, as well as pens or pencils.
3. You will have homework almost every day. The homework will often be a workbook assignment. (The workbook costs $8. Please bring a check made out to Newton South High School with World Language on the memo line.) It will be posted at http://lasraprice.weebly.com You can also get to my website by clicking on my name on the Newton South website at http://nshs.newton.k12.ma.us/content/faculty-directory I check homework at the beginning of class, so please take it out when you arrive at your seat. I accept late homework one day late for half credit. Do your homework on 8.5 x 11 inch size paper in your notebook. You will receive credit for homework that is correctly done and is complete. You may use the same sheet of paper for more than one assignment, but do them in an organized fashion.
4. Do your homework at home. Please do not use class as a study hall. I will take other homework away.
5. Attendance is important for success. Do not cut class. The N policy will be enforced in this class. Three tardies equal one cut, three cuts equal an N. Do not let attendance become an issue.
6. I use a Spanish dictionary and you should, also. However, please do not use on line translators. If I feel that you are, I will ask you to redo assignments. Take risks and have faith in your language abilities.
7. If you receive a D or an F on a test or quiz, you may make corrections during J block to raise your grade to a C-.
Use of Spanish
1. We will use Spanish quite a bit. I also ask that you speak Spanish with your classmates. And when you see me in the hall, please speak to me in Spanish!
2. Participate as much as possible.
3. The oral portion of your grade will be based on your use of Spanish in class, including with classmates. I will check to see that you are speaking Spanish in class by making notes in my grade book or on a notecard. If you and a partner finish an oral activity and others are still working, start the assignment from the beginning again.
Phone Numbers/E-mail.Website
1. I will give you/post an assignment sheet so that you know what the homework is and when tests/quizzes are scheduled. Get the phone number or e-mail of someone in class. If you are absent, contact that person to see what you missed or if assignments have changed.
2. Check the website for homework assignments and announcements.
J Block
1. I will be here for J Block on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Tests/Quizzes
1. You will have a test or quiz each week. If you have forgotten to study for a test or quiz, take your books home or are absent the day before, please assume that you will still take it. The same is true if I am absent the day before the test or quiz. Assessments for Curriculum Two students in this class may be different.
Agenda
1. I will post the agenda of the class activities each day on the white board. I will start class by having you write the answers to some questions that will be on the board at the start of each class. These answers should be written on your homework.
Other Items
1. Please ask for permission to go to the bathroom.
2. If you anticipate being absent, you must take quizzes/tests before you leave.
3. Do not eat in class. You may drink water.
4. Newton South has a policy regarding cell phones. They may not be used during class and must be turned off. If it rings or if you text during class, you will turn it off and turn it in. You may collect it from your housemaster. Electronic devices may not be used in the classroom unless we are using them for an educational activity.
Grades
1. Tests (40%), quizzes (15%), oral participation in Spanish (15%), skits/essays (15%) and homework (15%).
¡Buena suerte!
